LIVE-WORK LOFTs

For well over a decade, since 2008, CHA:COL has been at the forefront of interior architecture with its work on live-work lofts and creative spaces in dense downtown Los Angeles. From neighborhoods as varied as the bustling Historic Core to the warehouse-heavy Arts District, we have tackled unique urban problems. Often historic buildings, zoning laws, creative needs, Homeowners’ Associations, flexible spaces and even domestic needs can compete with each other. Our architectural approach has prioritized conflicting requirements into cohesive design issues. Our loft clients have been as varied as the spaces and neighborhoods they inhabit. With our work, we show live-work lofts all have remarkably similar needs, regardless of their physical configuration. Here are our award-winning success stories

LAW SUITE

Live-work is a commonly used term. On this unique project, we inverted the design to utilize a loft as “Work-Live” in the Arts District area of downtown LA

TWIN LOFT

A bold “suturing”, or stitching together, of two adjacent loft units, to address the needs of a growing family. The loft required a comprehensive look into codes and the use of millwork to create separation

WRITER’S BLOCK

An AIA award-winning transformation of an odd shaped loft into a creative urban den for a NYTimes bestselling author and game designer couple

LOFT 405 SOUTH

Our very first initiation into architect-designed loft interiors. Creating both openness and separation to give two adults and a child their own corners without sacrificing connectedness

toy loft

A unique insertion of a toy-like mini loft within an existing loft space for a video-illustrator couple in the Arts District of downtown LA

CORNER LOFT

Our design for a dramatic corner loft that navigated the interior uses of a creative space, while maximizing its unique location in an urban cross-section of the Arts District
